Bearskin to John Loop
Starting
from the Outfitters on East Bearskin, paddle the four
miles down the lake to Alder. From Alder portage to Canoe.
The portage from Canoe to Pine can be very challenging, but the reward
of Johnson Falls waits on the other side. Eat lunch and swim at
the falls. Then continue on your way down Pine Lake. As you
paddle along on Pine be thankful that you're paddling east, since going
the opposite way can sometimes be quite windy. After Pine you'll
briefly re-enter
civilization on McFarland. Look for moose on Little John and if
your timing is right try to camp on one of the two wonderful sites
there. The trip through the Pikes and Clearwater is full of high
cliffs as well as smaller rock faces. Either portage down to
Caribou or
stay on
Clearwater until Deer. You'll go from Deer to Moon and then back
to Bearskin on
the last day of your trip.
