Overlooking a BWCA lake

About the BWCA

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a protected wilderness area covering over 1 million acres of the Superior National Forest.  As a paddling destination the BWCA offers over a thousand miles of canoe routes traveling through interconnected lakes. The area is abundant with wildlife, including moose, wolves, black bears, martins, fishers, lynx, otters, loons, and many other species of birds and mammals. The BWCA is also a popular fishing destination, with large populations of walleye, trout, pike, small mouth bass, and more localized populations of other game fish.  The BWCA is enjoyed by thousands of people each year, and as such there are many regulations on travel in the area. Please try to respect these rules, knowing that the efforts of the paddlers before you are the only reason this beautiful wilderness still exists.
