Bearskin Lodge News | March 30, 2012

Greetings from Bearskin Lodge on the Gunflint Trail,

Suddenly it’s spring at Bearskin Lodge. Our snow abruptly melted, our ice went out on an all-time early date, and ducks are cavorting on our lake. We’ll still get more snow, no doubt — in fact it is snowing lightly as we write this — but this has the potential to be an extraordinary spring on the Gunflint Trail. Join us!

Upcoming Special offers

  • May and early June Getaway Packages starting at $300 for 3 nights at Bearskin Lodge
and dinner for two at nearby Trail Center Restaurant
    | Get the complete Northwoods experience at a very affordable price. 3 nights for the price of 2 at Bearskin Lodge, complimentary canoe rental, and dinner at the iconic Trail Center restaurant. Pricing depends on cabin and date choices. Available Sunday – Thursday nights, May 1 – June 8. (Only open for new reservations during these dates, not available with other deals. Weekend dates not included.) Call 800 338-4170 or email us stay@bearskin.com to get pricing details for your date choices.

  • Stay at value season rates, the lowest rates of every year, from now until May 18th. Minnesota’s Fishing Opener date, May 12th,falls within Value Season Rates. During most years the ice on East Bearskin Lake melts within days of the fishing opener, making for less than ideal fishing conditions at that time. With the ice already gone from East Bearskin Lake this year, the water should be much warmer by mid-May. Early fishing has potential to be quite interesting in 2012.

Fishing Guide

Erik Simula, our winter musher, has decided to stay at Bearskinthis summer to be our on-site fishing guide. In 2009 Erik made a 1000 mile birch bark canoe trip, the Arrowhead Journey, that many Bearskin guests enjoyed following on his blog. He has an extensive history as a fisherman and wilderness guide. Erik will be offering guided fishing trips on East Bearskin Lake, as well as overnight guided fishing trips into the BWCAW. He’ll
also be giving a weekly “fish talk” for guests all summer. More info will be available soon here.

Spring and Summer Availability

Deposits for summer reservations are due on April 15. We always have a few guests whose summer plans change, so a few cabins will open up in the next few weeks. Give us a call or email stay@bearskin.com
if you’re still hoping to reserve your perfect cabin and date. If your ideal date is full, we can put your name on the waiting list –most of the time we do find a spot for people on the list.

Spring Quilter’s Weekend

Come up to the Gunflint Trail this spring for a 2 or 3 day weekend of quilting fun and companionship. Friday May 4th, Saturday May 5th, through noon on Sunday, May 6th. If you’d like to extend it a day, many quilters have expressed an interest in starting Thursday evening, May 3rd. Dining on Saturday, May 5th and a simple lunch on Sunday, May 6th, are also part of your package. Cost for the whole weekend with shared accommodations will be $155/person for 2 nights, $220/person for 3 nights. (If a group offriends would like to come together, call us about pricing — we’ve priced thisso everyone can have their own bedroom, and can adjust pricing for friends or family members who would comfortably share a room.)

Canoe Trips

Bearskin Wilderness Outfitters will be back for another season, with more
canoes and gear.
For anyone looking to get a better night’s sleep in the woods, Bearskin Outfitters has added Hennessy Hammocks for rent. Let us know if you’re interested in trying one out. Also new this year will be Cooke Custom Sewing’s barrel packs. These packs are a great way to keep food intact and limit the smells around camps. We’ll continue to use our Kondos and CCS insulated packs as well, especially when it is important to keep food fresh longer. Many groups find that by renting gear and canoes from BWO, they can combine a canoe trip with a Bearskin stay. Give our outfitting staff a call — they love to talk to you about your trip plans.

  • Outfitting Special    4 person, 4 day complete canoe trip outfitting for $1095.  Complete Kevlar canoe outfitting for groups of four at $1095. Trips leave and finish at E. Bearskin Lake (such as the Johnson Falls Loop). If available, cost includes stay in an East BearskinCamper Cabin. Ask for the newsletter special outfitting offer.

To any Bearskin guests who love to “pin” on Pinterest: You are welcome to pin pictures to your boards from our Bearskin Flickr site or our Bearskin Facebook page. For the rest of you who
are totally mystified by what that means, just go enjoy our pictures on Flickr and Facebook and don’t wonder about that whole pinning thing.

We hope to see you at beautiful Bearskin in your favorite season!
